The Amazon Milk Frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) is a large, arboreal tree frog native to South America. Known for their blue and brown banded patterns and docile temperament, these frogs are excellent for beginners. They are nocturnal and can live 8-12 years with proper care. Their common name comes from the white, milk-like secretion they produce when stressed.

Housing Requirements

  • Terrarium Size: 24x18x36 Exo Terra or similar tall terrarium minimum for a pair
  • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C) during the day
  • Humidity: 70-85% relative humidity
  • Lighting: Standard vivarium LED on a 12-hour day/night cycle; UVB is not required — dust prey with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement instead
  • Setup: Arboreal with sturdy branches and plants

Environment

  • Strong horizontal and vertical branches
  • Large, sturdy plants
  • Water feature for soaking
  • Good ventilation to prevent stagnant air

Diet & Feeding

  • Large crickets, roaches, worms
  • Feed 2-3 times per week for adults
  • Can eat surprisingly large prey
  • Regular calcium and vitamin supplementation

Special Notes

  • Can grow quite large (3+ inches)
  • Generally hardy once established
  • May be aggressive to smaller tank mates
  • Excellent jumpers - secure enclosure essential
  • Handle only when absolutely necessary for medical care or moving
