The Vanessa locality of Dendrobates tinctorius is a Suriname morph that entered the US hobby through wild-caught imports around 2013-2014 and is now well established from captive breeding. Vanessa carry a black-and-white body pattern with variable amounts of blue-grey on the legs and belly, and coloration deepens as the frogs mature. Size and care are typical for tinctorius, adult females reach about 2.25 inches, males slightly smaller, and they are generally bold and visible during the day. Like all tinctorius they are terrestrial, active by day, and can live 8-12 years with appropriate husbandry. They lose their toxicity in captivity when fed a commercial diet.

Housing Requirements

  • Terrarium Size: 18 x 18 x 24 Exo Terra or similar minimum for a pair; add roughly five gallons of interior volume per additional frog for small groups
  • Tank Mates: Best kept as a pair or as one female with multiple males. Adult females are territorial and usually fight when kept together long-term. Sexed juveniles can be raised together up to sexual maturity (around 10-12 months) and then split.
  • Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C) during the day, 65-72°F (19-22°C) at night
  • Humidity: 80-100% relative humidity
  • Lighting: Standard vivarium LED on a 12-hour day/night cycle; UVB is not required, dust prey with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement instead

Substrate & Environment

  • Substrate: ABG mix or similar bioactive substrate over a drainage layer, topped with leaf litter
  • Plants: Broadleaf plants (bromeliads, pothos, philodendron) for cover and egg-laying sites
  • Hides: Cocohuts, magnolia leaf tents, and low cork bark on the floor; Vanessa spend most of their time on the ground
  • Water Features: A shallow water dish or small pool for tadpole deposition sites, not required for swimming

Diet & Feeding

  • Primary Diet: Melanogaster and hydei fruit flies fed daily to every other day
  • Variety: Springtails, aphids, and occasional pinhead crickets or small isopods for enrichment
  • Supplements: Dust flies with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement at most feedings and a vitamin A / multivitamin once a week
  • Feeding Schedule: Adults every 1-2 days; froglets every day

Breeding

  • Sexual Maturity: 10-12 months
  • Breeding Setup: A bonded pair in a well-planted vivarium with cocohuts and petri dishes as egg sites
  • Clutch Size: 3-10 eggs deposited on broad leaves or petri dishes, often every 5-10 days once a pair is producing
  • Tadpole Care: The male transports hatched tadpoles to water; pull to individual cups with clean water and standard tadpole diet, or leave in-tank, both work. Metamorphosis takes 60-80 days.

Special Notes

  • Vanessa are among the bolder tinctorius forms and are typically visible during the day, which makes tracking pattern development easy as juveniles color up
  • Females are the aggressive sex, never house two adult females together long-term
  • Calls are quiet; males will call from cover when a female is receptive
  • Handle only when absolutely necessary for medical care or moving
  • Keep locality-pure; never mix Vanessa with other tinctorius morphs or other dart frog species
