Dendrobates Tinctorius "Patricia" Care Guide
Dendrobates Tinctorius "Patricia"
Last updated: September 21, 2026
Dendrobates tinctorius 'Patricia' is a large-form tinctorius from Suriname, first exported to the United States in 1999 through Patricia Grueneberg's Vanishing Jewels — the morph carries her name. Adults show a pale yellow ground broken by black spots and blotches, with pale to cornflower-blue legs; yellow coverage varies noticeably even among siblings, and some frogs carry yellow 'bracelets' at the front wrists. Patricia is a bold, active display frog and one of the better-established captive lines in the US hobby, with 10-20+ year lifespans typical.
Housing Requirements
- Terrarium Size: 18 x 18 x 24 Exo Terra or similar minimum for a pair; a 24 x 18 x 18 also works well for a large-form pair
- Tank Mates: Best kept as a single pair or one female with multiple males. Two adult females almost always fight, especially once one is receptive to breeding. Juveniles can group up until sexual maturity at 10-16 months, then all but one female need to be pulled.
- Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C) during the day, 65-72°F (19-22°C) at night
- Humidity: 80-100% relative humidity
- Lighting: Standard vivarium LED on a 12-hour day/night cycle; UVB is not required — dust prey with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement instead
Substrate & Environment
- Substrate: ABG mix or a similar bioactive-safe blend of tree fern fiber, sphagnum, charcoal, and bark, topped with a deep layer of leaf litter
- Plants: Broadleaf plants (Philodendron, Anthurium), bromeliads, and mosses; Patricia uses the ground more than the canopy, so keep low cover generous
- Water Features: A small pool or film-canister setup for tadpole deposition; standing water is optional but used
- Hiding Spots: Cocohuts, cork rounds, and leaf-litter piles at floor level
Diet & Feeding
- Primary Diet: Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei fruit flies as staples
- Variety: Springtails and aphids for enrichment; occasional isopods and small pinhead crickets for adults
- Supplementation: Dust every feeding with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement (Repashy Calcium Plus or equivalent)
- Feeding Schedule: Daily for froglets, 4-5 times weekly for adults
Breeding
- Sexual Maturity: 10-16 months
- Breeding Setup: Pair in a well-established vivarium with smooth-leaved plants and horizontal film canisters or petri dishes as egg sites
- Egg Laying: Clutches of 3-10 eggs, deposited on smooth surfaces every 5-10 days once a pair is producing
- Tadpole Care: Male transports hatched tadpoles to water. Tads can be pulled and raised individually in cups with regular water changes on a commercial tadpole diet, or left in-tank with parents; both work. Metamorphosis in about 60-90 days.
- Note: Patricia is a reliably prolific line once a pair settles in.
Special Notes
- Bold Display Frog: Patricia is out in the open through most of the day, which makes them one of the better tinctorius morphs for a display tank
- Variable Yellow: Yellow coverage varies from frog to frog even within one clutch — sibling groups look like related individuals rather than identical copies
- Female-Female Aggression: The standard tinctorius rule applies; never house two adult females together
- Long-Lived: 10+ years is typical with good care, and 20+ years has been documented in the hobby
- Captive Toxicity: Captive-bred animals fed a commercial diet lose the alkaloid toxicity of their wild counterparts
- Handle only when absolutely necessary for medical care or moving
