Dendrobates tinctorius 'Bakhuis' originates from the Bakhuis Mountains in Suriname and is characterized by bold yellow and black patterns with blue leg coloration. These frogs are known for their robust size and hardy nature, making them excellent for both novice and experienced keepers. Bakhuis tinctorius typically show consistent patterning with bright yellow bodies marked by distinctive black bands and striking blue on their legs and feet. They are active, territorial frogs that do well in pairs and are known for their loud calls. With proper care, they display excellent breeding behavior and parental care of their tadpoles.
Housing Requirements
- Terrarium Size: 18 x 18 x 24 Exo Terra or a 20-gallon long minimum for a pair
- Tank Mates: Best housed as a pair, or single female with multiple males. Two adult females will fight over territory and males.
- Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C) during the day, 68-72°F (20-22°C) at night
- Humidity: 80-100% relative humidity
- Lighting: UVB lighting recommended, 12-hour day/night cycle
Substrate & Environment
- ABG mix (Atlanta Botanical Garden mix) or similar well-draining substrate
- Live plants for natural environment and humidity regulation
- Multiple hiding spots and climbing opportunities
- Clean, dechlorinated water source
Diet & Feeding
- Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster and hydei)
- Springtails for juveniles
- Cricket/roach pinheads for larger specimens
- Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements
Breeding
- Mature at 12-18 months
- Requires established territory and proper conditions
- Tadpoles need individual cups with regular water changes
Special Notes
- Extremely sensitive to chemicals and chlorine
- Handle minimally and only when necessary
- Quarantine all new animals for 30+ days
