The Fringed Leaf Frog (Cruziohyla craspedopus) is a large, spectacular tree frog native to Central America. Known for their distinctive fringed skin flaps and bright coloration, these nocturnal frogs are prized by advanced keepers. They require high humidity, excellent ventilation, and stable conditions to thrive in captivity.
Housing Requirements
- Terrarium Size: 18x18x24 Exo Terra or similar tall terrarium minimum for a pair; 18x18x36 preferred for adults
- Temperature: 72-80°F (22-27°C) during the day
- Humidity: 85-100% relative humidity
- Lighting: Standard vivarium LED on a 12-hour day/night cycle; UVB is not required — dust prey with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement instead
- Setup: Heavily planted arboreal environment
- Tankmates: They are generally good with other Cruziohyla, but keep an eye out for wrestling adults. Separate if behavior dictates.
Environment
- Tall terrarium with extensive climbing opportunities
- Large, sturdy plants (bromeliads, pothos, etc.)
- Multiple water features
- Excellent ventilation despite high humidity needs
Diet & Feeding
- Large crickets, roaches, moths, and aphids for enrichment
- Feed 3-4 times per week for adults
- Juveniles feed more frequently
- Calcium and vitamin supplementation essential
Special Notes
- Nocturnal and arboreal
- Extremely sensitive to water quality
- Use only dechlorinated, aged water
- Handle only when absolutely necessary for medical care or moving; can be stressed by excessive handling
