The Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad (Bombina orientalis) is a hardy, semi-aquatic amphibian native to Asia. Known for their bright orange-red bellies and green-brown backs, these toads are excellent for beginners. They require both land and water areas in their enclosure and are active during the day. With proper care, they can live 10-15 years and are known for their distinctive warning posture when threatened.
Housing Requirements
- Terrarium Size: 18x18x18 Exo Terra or similar paludarium minimum for a small group
- Temperature: 68-75°F (20-24°C)
- Humidity: 70-90% relative humidity
- Lighting: Standard vivarium LED on a 12-hour day/night cycle; UVB is not required — dust prey with a quality calcium plus D3 supplement instead
- Setup: Paludarium with both land and water areas
Environment
- Half land, half water setup
- Shallow water (2-3 inches deep)
- Filtration system for water area
- Hiding spots on both land and water sides
Diet & Feeding
- Crickets, waxworms, earthworms, and aphids for variety
- Aquatic foods when in water
- Feed every other day for adults
- Dust with calcium supplement
