Chrome Dart Frog Care Guide
Ameerga Basseleri "Chrome"
Last updated: October 22, 2025
Locality: Chrome — Ameerega bassleri is a small, diurnal poison dart frog native to the humid rainforests of Peru. The Chrome locality is particularly striking, exhibiting a metallic sheen that ranges from green and turquoise to deep silver-blue tones depending on lighting and lineage.
Although relatively new to the hobby, this species has quickly gained popularity for its beauty, boldness, and peaceful social nature. Unlike most dart frogs, A. bassleri thrive in group settings, with individuals of different ages and sexes cohabiting harmoniously.
In captivity, they do best in humid, bioactive vivariums with thriving microfauna populations. With stable conditions and proper husbandry, these frogs can live 10–12 years, making them an exceptional species for both display and group breeding projects.
Ameerga Basseleri (Chrome) Care Guide
Overview
Ameerga Basseleri (Chrome) is a thumbnail dart frog requiring specialized microfauna-based diet and high humidity.
Housing Requirements
- Terrarium Size: 18 x 18 x 18 Exo terra is ideal for 3- 4 frogs.
- Temperature: Maintain 70–78 °F (21–26 °C) with a natural day/night gradient.
- Humidity: Keep 80–100% relative humidity, allowing short drying cycles to prevent stagnation.
- Lighting: Use LED on a 12-hour cycle to support plant growth and frog health.
- Tankmates Bassleri are excellent group frogs — compatible across all ages and sexes, with little to no territorial aggression.
Environment
- Establish a bioactive vivarium with a dense microfauna base (springtails, isopods).
- Provide live mosses, leaf litter, and small tropical plants for cover and humidity retention.
- Incorporate film canisters, bromeliads, or similar structures for calling and egg deposition.
- Offer shallow, clean water features or moist leaf axils for tadpole transport and hydration.
Diet & Feeding
- Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster and D. hydei) should make up the staple diet. Feed juveniles 5–7 times weekly and adults 3–4 times weekly, following a consistent vitamin schedule.
- Offer springtails to freshly morphed froglets.
- Pinhead crickets make an excellent occasional treat for adults.
- Dust all food items with calcium and vitamin supplements at every feeding. Breeding adults should receive a vitamin A supplement 1–2 times per month.
Breeding
- Bassleri breed readily in well-established, humid environments.
- Eggs are typically laid in film canisters or on smooth leaves near water sources.
- Males often transport tadpoles to shallow water or leaf axils for development.
- Tadpoles metamorphose in roughly 60–90 days, depending on temperature and feeding.
Special Notes
- Due to their small size, maintain stable microfauna populations to prevent food shortages.
- Extremely sensitive to chemical residues — use only purified or RO water.
- Monitor humidity closely; prolonged dryness can lead to stress or desiccation.
- Ameerega bassleri are hardy once established but require consistent environmental stability for long-term success.
